The Latin American Community Center is raising funds to build a youth playground!

The LACC is building an outdoor playground on the corner of 4th and Harrison Streets for children ages 5-12 enrolled in agency youth programming. This includes Before and After School Community Learning Centers and Summer Day Camp. Programming supports approximately 280 students annually by providing homework help, tutoring, and enrichment activities.

The new LACC playground will promote physical activity and social-emotional development. This will reduce health disparities for Hispanic children in Delaware and help them to form habits that will persist through adulthood. Specifically, outdoor play promotes motor, cognitive, social, and linguistic development; reinforces the role that exercise plays in physical health; and promotes the growth of friendships from children of diverse backgrounds. It is also associated with decreased BMI.

The new LACC playground will consist of four pieces of equipment:

1) Triple Tower Physical- A play unit that offers many levels of play including inclined climbing nets, curly climber, slides, wackle bridge, and banister bars

2) Galaxy Draco- A unit that invites children to a challenging climbing expedition. There are a variety of climbing apparatuses to challenge children and grow concentration and fine motor skills

3) Supernova- A large slating rotating ring with 7 divided areas designed to motivate children to explore countless play options. The areas of the ring inspire children to help one another invent games, and the variety of areas and open ground level design make it possible to include all abilities in play. 

4) Explorer Arch- A new type of net climbing structure which will encourage children to make up new games to play


Donations to the LACC Do More 24 Delaware campaign will help to provide youth with a space where they can learn, grow, and thrive for years to come.
