Our mission is to improve and promote the well-being of the Nanticoke Indian Community and to increase the visibility of American Indian cultures in rural areas, to cultivate awareness, understanding, and respect, while preserving the existence of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe as an Aboriginal/Indigenous society through conservation, education and cultural awareness programs.
Education: NIA provides scholarships to high school seniors who are seeking post-secondary education whether at a four year college, university, or trade school.
Educational/Cultural Events: The NIA’s Community Center provides programs and social services that include; a food bank, community dinners, Native cultural arts and craft lessons, Native drum and dance programs, educational programs, heritage and cultural activities, youth and elder/senior programs, healthcare services, as well as mental health and domestic violence programs and services. We host intergenerational programs, which are inherent to our Native community by welcoming participants of all ages. It creates opportunities for Native families and community members to work together, interact and engage through participation at events and programs. Examples of these programs and events are our annual Powwow, Heritage Day, Native American Day, the Unity Run, Men’s Breakfast, Ladies Luncheon, Seven Generations and Genealogy programs.
Nanticoke Indian History & Cultural Awareness Programs: Enhance the public’s respectful and promote compassionate engagement in Native American history, traditions, values, beliefs, and culture. These interactive programs include workshops, events, and presentations such as: Nanticoke language revitalization, Native spirituality, respect for Mother Earth, Native storytelling, the doctrine of discovery, ancestry/genealogy, traditional Native dancing and music.
Nanticoke Indian Museum: The Nanticoke Indian Museum is located in Millsboro, DE. And educates are variety of people and groups throughout the tristate region. Specific target populations include, but are not limited to public/private K-12 schools, post-secondary educational institutions including the
University of Delaware,
Delaware State University, Wilmington University,
Delaware Technical Community College,
State parks,
Lewes Historical Society,
Milton Historical Society,
Millsboro Art League,
Beebe Healthcare,
Freeman Arts Pavilion,
Southern Delaware Tourism, Senior Centers, visitors, tourists and other community groups.
Nanticoke Indian Tribe Newsletter: Is a monthly newsletter with a circulation of 1000+ in Sussex county and beyond to our Tribal members.
Monthly Member Meetings: Are hybrid meetings that occur on the first Tuesday of every month to provide vital information and updates to our Nanticoke Indian Tribe members, as well as provides an opportunity for community engagement, fellowship and an outlet to address community member concerns and needs.
The demographics we serve reflect the cultural diversity throughout Delaware and most notably Sussex County’s indigent and underrepresented populations.
