Former President Barack Obama once stated, “the relative decline of American education is untenable for our economy, unsuitable for our democracy, and unacceptable for our children, and we cannot afford to let it continue.” The right to quality education is a fundamental human right but can often feel like a far fetch luxury for many students and families who may come from lower socioeconomic conditions here in the United States. Thus, students being able to read by the end of their third-grade school year is essential to student success and career development. The National Research Council discovered that there is a direct correlation between reading skill sets at a third-grade level and being able to complete high school efficiently. Students lacking adequate reading skills are less likely to graduate high school and earn less income over their lifespan, significantly impacting the global economy.
Your donation today to Latinos Unidos Abriendo Caminos would impact a total of 8,000 students in Delaware, 45% of who are Spanish speaking (3,600), to have access to Spanish-titled books representative of their culture and honors their native language. Ultimately, providing Spanish-titled books empowers students to develop a passion and love for reading that celebrates their culture and allows personal connection to emerge.
Together, we can ensure that children have culturally relevant resources to read on grade level, even during the most turbulent times, and have a path toward success.
